Course 04 Assurance

The Well Productivity ProgrammeProduction Chemistry and Flow Assurance

From the tubing wall to the deepwater riser, chemistry decides whether a well keeps flowing. This course works through the corrosion, souring, scale, organic and hydrate threats that attack the production system, and how each one is predicted and managed.

Refined over 15 years of classroom delivery to national and international operators, now rebuilt as a problem-based, self-contained online programme for working petroleum engineers.

What you'll be able to do

Keep the system flowing: and intact

Production chemistry is where deliverability quietly erodes. Course 04 trains you to anticipate each threat before it bites, read the early symptoms, and choose the right prevention or treatment.

Predict corrosion

Tell sweet from sour attack, anticipate chloride and sulphide cracking, and match metallurgy.

Control souring

Recognise sulphate-reducing bacteria, reservoir souring and biological fouling, and their controls.

Manage deposition

Predict soluble and insoluble scale, paraffin wax and asphaltene build-up before they choke flow.

Beat hydrates

Read formation envelopes, find the vulnerable locations, and design prevention and mitigation.

Five threats to a flowing system

Metal loss, microbes, mineral scale, organic deposits and hydrate plugs: each appears as conditions change from hot downhole to cold subsea. Every module isolates one threat and the chemistry behind it.

Module 16

Oilwell Corrosion Mechanisms and Metallurgy

Why steel fails downhole, the prerequisites, the acid gases, and the cracking that follows.

  • T01The Prerequisites for Corrosion
  • T02Sweet Corrosion (COâ‚‚)
  • T03Sour Corrosion (Hâ‚‚S)
  • T04Chloride Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC)
  • T05Sulphide Stress Corrosion Cracking (SSC)
17
Module 17

Biological Fouling and Reservoir Souring

Life in the reservoir: bacteria that sour the fluids and foul the system.

  • T01Sulphate Reducing Bacteria (SRB)
  • T02Temporary vs. Permanent Souring
  • T03Biological Fouling and Slimes
18
Module 18

Soluble and Insoluble Scale Deposition

When dissolved minerals fall out of solution and armour the flow path.

  • T01Carbonate Scales (Soluble)
  • T02Sulphate Scales (Insoluble)
19
Module 19

Organic Deposition: Wax and Asphaltenes

When the oil itself deposits, paraffins on cooling, asphaltenes on pressure change.

  • T01Wax (Paraffins)
  • T02Asphaltenes and Tar Mats
20
Module 20

Hydrates and Deepwater Flow Assurance

Ice that isn't cold: where hydrates form, where they threaten, and how to stop them.

  • T01Hydrate Formation Envelopes
  • T02Vulnerable Wellbore Locations
  • T03Prevention and Mitigation

Who this course is for

  • Production, integrity and flow-assurance engineers safeguarding long-term deliverability.
  • Production chemists selecting inhibitors and treatment programmes.
  • Subsea and deepwater engineers managing hydrate and deposition risk.
  • Engineers extending Course 03's damage knowledge into chemistry and assurance.

What you leave with

  • The ability to diagnose sweet and sour corrosion and the cracking mechanisms that follow.
  • A working grasp of reservoir souring and biological fouling and how they are controlled.
  • Confidence predicting and managing scale, wax and asphaltene deposition.
  • A practical approach to hydrate envelopes, vulnerable locations and mitigation.
How it's taught

Problem-based, not slide-based

Every module opens with a real well problem. You work the engineering, then the theory is introduced to explain what you found: the way the material was honed in the classroom over fifteen years.

01

Start with a well

Each topic is anchored to a field scenario with real data, not an abstract derivation.

02

Work the problem

You read the symptoms, identify the threat and quantify the risk, then the theory frames why.

03

Carry it forward

The chemistry here underpins the surveillance, prevention and remediation courses ahead.
